Details: This position is for a scientist with subject matter expertise in femtosecond lasers, both in the Ti:sapph and Ytterbium fiber area. The successful candidate will have extensive experience in the research, design, assembly and maintenance of high average power, ultrafast titanium sapphire laser systems, or ultrafast fiber based laser systems. The candidate must be experienced in the diagnosis of ultrafast laser pulses, both spatially and temporally.  A good understanding of non-linear optics and applications is needed, especially high harmonic generation.  Additionally, knowledge of and experience with wavelength conversion schemes is needed. Occasional domestic travel is required for this position. In addition, grant writing skills are a must.  Successful candidate will be responsible for obtaining SBIR/STTR programs to further product development and address new markets.

Required Skills/Knowledge:

  • A proven track record in ultrafast laser development and/or operation
  • 2+ years experience is required in the conversion of ultrafast laser pulses to various wavelengths in the EM spectrum.
  • Knowledge of laser architectures, including DPSS laser systems
  • Knowledge of optics, optical systems and optical setups
  • Knowledge of and experience with pulse compression techniques and the management of dispersion.
  • High level of understanding and experience of the FROG pulse characterization technique and/or similar techniques
  • 2+ years experience in the design and troubleshooting of vacuum systems, to UHV level

  • LabVIEW
  • 3D CAD (SolidWorks)
  • FEM/FEA software
  • Optical design software

Required Education:

  • Ph.D. completed by time of hire

Ultrafast Fiber Laser Engineer

What You Will Do:  As the Ultrafast Fiber Laser Engineer you will spend the majority of your time building and orchestrating the production of ultrafast laser systems, with up to 20% of time supporting installation and field service of our laser systems.  You will be an integral member of a highly accomplished team bringing the most advanced ultrafast laser technologies to the market.

Required Skills:

  • Experience through education and/or professional experience building fs-class fiber laser systems in a production environment.
  • Experience with engineering documentation, bill of materials, work instructions, and assembly process documentation for new products.
  • Experience with design for manufacturing and design for cost.
  • Experience in applications engineering.
  • Customer relationship management and field installation/service experience.
  • Experience with ultrafast laser diagnostic equipment.
  • Experience with assembly, alignment, and troubleshooting of lasers and complicated optical setups.
  • Knowledge of fiber laser technology, laser and optical design and modeling, optical components and materials from UV to IR, and optical metrology and measurement equipment.
  • Familiarity with diffraction gratings, polarization optics, reflective optics, beam telescoping, and general laser principles.
  • Excellent understanding of the interplay of structural, optical, and thermal design features on system performance.
  • Ability to travel 20% of time to install and service fielded laser systems.
  • Outstanding communication, technical writing, and time management skills.
